The Gentse Feesten is a music and theatre festival in the city of Ghent, Belgium. Besides stage events there are random small street acts such as mimickers, buskers, etc. The festival starts on the Saturday before July 21 (Belgium’s national holiday) and lasts ten days. The last day (always a Monday) is known as de dag van de lege portemonnees (the day of the empty wallets) alluding to the fact that many people have spent their last penny at the festival, and is by the people of Ghent seen as “their” day while the stream of visitors from other places ceases.

“One night, I went to to a pub called An Droichead Beag (The Small Bridge). Who happens to be performing, but Eoin Duignan. Late that night back at the hostel, we all sat around talking about how good the session was. There was a knock on the door… who could that be? In walks Eoin and the band!. He lives “next door” across some green fields… We sat in candlelight drinking tea and playing tunes until the sun came up …

Got given a vintage photo album by a man called Larry last Sunday.

He bought it some years ago in Cumberland street market for a fiver.

The photographer seems to follow a boat crew, methinks, and the second person from the left and the one on the right are reoccurring in some of the photographs.

The the hardcover bound book is clothed in green with a light orange brown rectangle card on the left that reads ” Pictures From My Camera” with a flower underneath that looks like a Fuschia blowing in the wind …There are about 2 dozen photographs in all. The crew, some different sailing boats, one the size of the “Jeanie Johnson” and another like a “Galway Hooker”, landscapes and a few street scenes …

What a crew! They look like they’re about to embark on an expedition. There is comfort amongst them and it feels like they know eachother well.

I think the time frame is early decades of the 1900′s. The photographs are very thin photography paper, most of them matte with a few glossy ones.

I’ve been fascinated ever since and want to make it one of my pet projects. I’ll keep updating as time permits, follow the tag ” PicturesFromMyCamera ” on the right or subscribe to the newsletter if you want to keep updated.

Peace and Cheese

Horses Are Woven Into the Fabric of Ireland

When you think of Ireland, pictures of sheep probably come into your mind, dotting the hillsides like popcorn on a plush, green carpet. However, horses are also very much a part of the history and culture of the Emerald Isle.

Irish Horses : Clara : Ireland

Genetically speaking, if you have some Irish in you, it will be difficult not to see a horse without some trigger of emotion. A love of horses can be knitted into your genes as much as fair skin, freckles, a long, slender nose, and yes, maybe even your temper!

You simply cannot talk about Ireland, or its Celtic history without mentioning Equus. The two are entwined like the never ending circles in knotwork gracing the ancient Book of Kells and stones.

Ireland has a history rich with horses, as rich as the limestone bone-building fields of grass the stud farm horses graze on. From Ireland’s Celtic roots when horses were used for farming, funerals, weddings, reflections of their goddesses (Rhiannon and Epona), trading, and more, to today when horses continue to be a dominant force in the country.

One can see that there is something special in the relationship of the Irish with horses.
